Strategies for Learning ASL

In order to increase your language learning in the classroom, you would need to develop the following behaviors/habits:

1. Encourage each other to stay together and learn ASL. Do not miss class. Be sure to sign at all the times when you enter the ASL classroom (before the bell rings and after the bell rings).

2. Be sure to leave English and voice outside the door. You will not be able to use your voice because it impedes your language learning in the class. When you become a fluent signer, you will tempt less to use your voice.

3. Focus on the signer's face, not on the hands!!! It is rude to look away from the signer's face while they are signing to you. Keep in mind that a lot of grammar is in the facial expression and be sure to know what the person is trying to say to you.

4. Be sure to use your "active listening behaviors" to show the person that you understand him/her. It increases your comprehension skills and encourages you to become a successful learner. Follow all conversations that are happening in the ASL classroom.

5. Stay on task! Do not ask your classmates for English translation if you don't understand your teacher.

Good luck, everyone! :)

Fingerspelling

Fingerspelling is a unique form of American Sign Language. Once you learn ASL, you have to learn the manual alphabet in order to have communication with Deaf people, or anyone who uses sign language to communicate.
